Bucket of Blood, 2011. Photo : Guy L'Heureux
A lot of the blood pieces are about man's inhumanity to man. It started when i was very young but stepped up a level when the Hutus and Tutsi were slaughtering each other, rivers of blood, along with the bucket of blood comes the bucket of tears they go together and then there is my dark humour, such as the bluebird of happiness, the bird is dead. The pieces are simplistic but the meaning profound. The white figure holding it's head is about the head being the problem, better to think with your heart. The black bearish figure is about different levels of existence within ourselves, outer, inner ,secret. I work a lot but I am very reclusive and solitary. Reflection, contemplation are important to me and inspires the work. – Sara Day

An initiative of DAY, Sara (1954)
Sara Day, Rising,1996. Bois, or / Wood, gold, 16 x 120 x 23 cm. Photo © : Guy L'Heureux.Native to Montreal, Sara Day is a self-taught artist. Her personal process has evolved outside of the aesthetic trends developed in academic studies. One component of this process is marked with spirituality. The artist wants to inscribe her three-dimensional works in a symbolism where humanity interacts with the forces beyond it. For a bit of added lightness, this spirituality is traced with poetry and humour. Primarily created with earthen elements or wood, her works often marry human or animal forms that connect with the environment, thus suggesting a harmonious view of the living world. Since 1981, Sara Day has shown her sculptures in more than forty collaborative exhibitions, such as at the McClure Gallery in 2014 and the Galerie Robert Poulin in 2015, both located in Montreal. She has also had several solo exhibitions, including the most recent at the Galerie d’art d’Outremont in 2016. Some of her works are located in various private collections, such as Air Canada and Cirque du Soleil.

Don't Worry, Be Happy!26 septembre, 2016
It starts with found materials, bits of wood and such, and ends up with works of art that are as simple as they are profound. Opting for joy rather than sorrow, albeit aware of them being two sides of the same coin, Montreal artist Sara Day presents a selection of pieces in an exhibition that should not be missed.
By Dorota Kozinska
Born in Montreal in 1954, and proudly self-taught, Day leaves an undeniable mark on each object, no pun intended. Hewn from wood, her choice medium, she seeks simplicity by reducing the material to its minimum, stripping and taking away to finally reveal the form that is hers, and hers alone.
Stylized human figures are suspended by invisible threads, above a rectangular platform or hanging way up high from the ceiling.
Such is the case of her dandy of a "Golden boy" proudly displaying his gilded groin: Day's way of showing the potential in the male body, the spirit that can be born of it.
The spiritual is part and parcel of Day's production, her need for a holistic understanding of her environment, the need for space to breathe and observe, and one in which to create from the heart.
The Outremont gallery is perfectly suited for this exciting, and very tactile, show. The sculpture have lots of space and they usurp is with gusto. Primordial creatures climb up walls among fossil-like plants, and human figures soar in the air or 'rest' on it like hovering alien mummies...
NB: A short video accompanies the exhibition in which the artist discusses her works and approach (in French). Click on the gallery below to view.
